‘Soul sender’ was recorded during the Qingming Festival, customarily a day to visit tombs and make offerings to the dead, by Sheng Jie a.k.a. gogoj and Deng Boyu, two key figures in the Chinese underground avant-garde (Li Jianhong, Yan Jun, Torturing Nurse). Cello, RAT pedal, drums, and your pinna and eardrum make up the instrumentation. While the formants accessible in the timbral ranges of an instrument do not change, ways of performing a musical instrument always remain discoverable. Sheng and Deng create a vibrational coalition circulating awareness of entries, exits, and unisons, finding a pulse heard spatially. That gives the chills. Just like the resonances known through bumps in curves on plots of frequency and amplitude that evidence the Higgs boson and other briefly existing subatomic particles concentrated by acceleration and detected through collision. Sheng and Deng access resonance particles.

Bowed double bass, electric guitar, glockenspiel, a woman singing an Indian-style devotional song, strings, bagpipes? , a free-jazz saxophone solo and that's just the intro. Certainly the craziest thing you'll have heard in a long while. Lyrical and well up for a bout or two of furious head-banging, Dolphy Kick Bebop are difficult to pigeonhole. Their brand of mayhem is accessible and enjoyable, but impossible to dismiss as trivial or frivolous. It's as wild and edgy as they come. Mighty! martin corey
